In African tribes, only people with a certain level of prestige were allowed to wear masks during serious religious ceremonies. Black Africans believe that masks embody the spirits of deceased ancestors or certain natural phenomena. The rituals held with masks generally include praying for rain, sowing, harvesting, coming of age, witch doctor and burial. The main factor influencing the psychology of people around the mask is that the identity of the wearer is not disclosed and the wearer is granted special authority.
